  YTSD Gala 2004

YTSD and the Barnes Tennis Center celebrated Pam Shriver for her impressive and inspirational
tennis career, capturing 112 doubles titles and 21 singles titles. One of only 5 women to win
more than 100 career titles in the Open Era, Shriver was ranked among the Women's top 10
in womens' singles throughout her career and formed one of the greatest doubles teams of
all time with Martina Navratilova.
Shriver and her family have been strong supporters of the Barnes Tennis Center for many years.
She is an honorary member of YTSD's Foundation Board and grandmother, Marion Ketcham, is
one of the Barnes Tennis Center's original donors.

Thank you all, sponsors and volunteers for a successful night.

Ball nets funds for Youth Tennis

October 10, 2003

Young tennis players were winners the other night at the MatchPoint Ball, where their elders dined, danced and yielded to auction fever.

The party at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines netted $75,000 for Youth Tennis San Diego and the George Barnes Family Junior Tennis Center.

Leslie Evans chaired it. She and her husband, Rick, welcomed such patrons as Ruth and Gordon Jorgenson, Carol Baumer, Jean and Jack Hardy, Betty and Gary Biszantz, Karen and Bob Bowden, Tricia and Bill Kellogg, Victory and Dick Lareau, Kathy and Sandy Purdon, Margo and Scott Rogers, Smokey and John Sutherland, Kathy and Larry Willette, Bob Alden, Diane and David Archambault, Nancy and Paul Backus, Tina and Mike Bandemer, Lee and Stephen Booth, Gloria and Bruce Burgener, and Martin Chapman.

Cathy and Fred Circo were there, and so were Brett Dickinson, Marty and Shel Diller, Carolyn and Rocky Frost, Natalya and Javier Gonzalez, Lisa and Andy Harrison, Susan Jorgenson and Barry Lichtling, Lissa and David Haynes, Laura Castanedo, Margit and Jorgen Heimburger, Michael Kreiss, Jennifer and Fred Lewis, Dory and Mark McClure, Angel Lopez, and Jean Kremm.

Programs at the Barnes Tennis Center include After School Tennis, Wheel Chair Tennis, a high performance program for advanced players, and physical education activities for students at the Monarch School for homeless children.

Others in the MatchPoint crowd were Marty and Dr. Dan Molden, Kathryn Murphy, Wendy McWhethy, Audrey and Mike Phillips, Betty and Ben Press, Gil and Noel Robinson, Laura and Kenneth Sawyer, Alex Castanedo, Torrie and Jay Schiller, Steve Hubbs, Linn and David Walker, Ted Schroeder, Margot Wallace, Marilee and Steve Warfield, and Dana and Joe Zesbaugh, He's president of Youth Tennis San Diego.

Dinner began with a salad of spinach, stilton and poached pear, and the main course was Chicken Roulade and a beef medallion. The dessert was a chocolate ganache tart.

In a silent auction before dinner, competition was intense for golf and lunch with Rod Laver at La Jolla Country Club. The package went for $2,000.

Marty and Shel Diller were the winning bidders for a little girl's dress-up trunk packed with finery to delight a 5-to 10-year-old. (It contained a pink feather boa that Marty wore for the rest of the party.)

Ron Reina was the man in charge of the lively live auction, in which Tricia and Bill Kellogg were the top bidders for a stadium suite at the 2004 Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells.

Peter Robinson bought three days at the 2004 U.S. Open, and Lee and Steve Booth purchased air transportation, hotel accommodations, and two tickets for the Center Court for the first week at Wimbledon in 2004.
